Default How did you decide on a topic?

Did you create your blog around what is popular, or around your own likes and interests?

It's hard to decide on a topic sometimes. I usually look to other blogs for inspiration (as long as I add my own thoughts that works).

I think it's important to choose a topic which you got interest for. No point in writing a lot on a blog when you don't know enough about the topic/niche to write quality posts about it, because then no one would read it.

That's true. That is probably a huge part of why my first blog was such a bomb. I had to force my writing and it wasn't any fun.

Yes. Blogging is supposed to be fun and interesting, not boring because you know nothing about the niche you are writing about.
I see a lot of bloggers claiming they know a lot about SEO, but the only reason why they blog about it is because they want to earn money.
Quality content and interest in what you are blogging about => Visitors => Money.

Well, I blog about SEO because it interests me. I blog about a lot more than SEO also. My blog is a place for me to improve my writing and for me to express my thoughts. It's for fun and for profit.

Then it's OK of course. I was thinking about those who blog only for the sake of revenue, not because the topic interests them.
Those who blog only "for the sake of revenue" will often create low-quality articles as a result of their "hunger for cash".

I usually look at google trends to find hot topics or write on current events or things that I think will be popular in the future.

I create a blog content which interest me and which i know better. I don't go for popular things. For instance i like topics regarding education, hence i will post most of my topics on education.

I initially considered blogging about "making money online" (yes, you may laugh at me) thanks to people like John Chow and Jeremy Shoemoney, but I quickly realized I have neither the interest nor the expertise to compete with guys like them. I don't even come close.

After a while I realized I wanted to blog about web development and design. I've been working with the web for years, so the idea should have come natural but it actually didn't hit me until I was reading a bunch of other blogs and realized I had a lot of comments on what they did and more often than not had my own ideas on how to work with a particular topic.

A couple of my blogs were based on niche areas, and two have been based on my passion for great music and talent. One I am building at the moment, designed around promoting young musicians.

My blog was created around my cute dog. She is a mutt and is very unusually cute and phtogenic-so it was a great blog topic at the time.

Blogging is hard for me because it's something I get into and then all of a sudden I get bored of it. It's just like my other job. I did it for a year and then got bored and now I'm getting back into it.

Only about interests. It would be hard to make any quality content regarding things that don't give any excitement to you wouldn't it?

Same as Nicknicholas. I find Google Trends useful when getting inspiration for a post. But i often blog about something I learned recently for two reasons - for me not to forget about it and to share to anyone reading the blog.
